Fishing in Wisconsin

The endless Winter seems to finally be leaving us here in Wisconsin and Summer is finally here. For me that means long weekends spent camping and fishing.

Wisconsin has some fabulous places to fish and in that we are very lucky. The Wisconsin DNR has a comprehensive webpage for all questions you might have regarding fishing, licenses, safety and more.

If you would like information of great places to fish on Lake Michigan, the rivers and even with kids the DNR has information for that as well.

If you are looking for leather and nylon holders for your knives, flashlights or mulit-tool holders which I think are essential tools for every tackle box, visit our online store at Stallion Leather or call 414-764-7126.

Memorial Day

Memorial day, the "official start" of summer and a typically happy day to get out meet friends and celebrate with a barbecue or a day at the beach. Of course everyone knows the real meaning of Memorial Day is a holiday set aside to remember the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the armed services.

I hope that this Memorial Day each and everyone of us take the time to really think about these men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can be happy and secure in our homes, out enjoying the sunny weather and sharing a meal with family and friends.

Maybe this weekend we could do one or ore of the following:

1. Fly your flag and support the troops.

2. Go the the local Memorial Day parade or Memorial to the soldiers in your town and leave flowers to show your support.

3. If you see any soldiers while traveling, walk up and shake their hand and thank them for all their hard work and sacrifices.

4. Go to a site, like Anysoldier.com or Operationgratitude.com and pick a soldier to send a care package to.

5. Donate your time to Wounded Warrior Project.

6. If you know a family that has lost a loved one let them know that you care. Even though it may seem awkward or a painful everyone wants to know that their loved one is remembered and loved.

7. Listen to their stories.

8. Volunteer your time or goods to the USO. Most airports and military bases have USO facilities where soldiers and their families can "have their spirits lifted."

9. Vist the VA.

10. There are a million ways to say thank you we all just have to make the effort to do it.

I know many do not support military intervention and I am not here to talk about that or to preach. I simply want to remember all of those men and women who are away from home and family and doing whatever it takes to keep us safe and sound. As the saying goes, "freedom isn't free." it costs time away from family, and friends, loss of limbs and life.

On that note, to all of my friends and family and those soldiers I do not personally know, who have served or are currently in the US military I thank you for your sacrifice. My thoughts and prayers and with you and your family.

Have a nice day!

RIP United States Armed Service Members

Each day hundreds of thousands of Armed Forces protect our freedom and the rights of Americans and the USA. Last night, while on a training missing at Elgin Air Force Base in Florida, 7 Marines who were members of the Marine Special Operations Regiment from Camp Lejeune, N.C and 4 Blackhawk helicopter crew members from the Army  National  Guard lost their lives.

We salute their service and are sorry to hear of their passing. Our thoughts are with them as well as with their families.

Venison Chili

Good morning! I do not know about you but I am getting a little tired of winter. I am ready to get out and fish! In a mere 15 days it will be Spring although I do not think that we will see any Spring weather in Wisconsin anytime soon.

In the meantime I thought I would share my favorite recipe for belly warming, hearty Venison Chili! This recipe should keep you warm over the next few week, that is until we can get out and enjoy some time on the water.

Venison Chili

3 tablespoons hot chili powder
2 tablespoons ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon dried chili flakes
1/4 cup olive oil
3 cups chopped onions ( from 2 medium)
6 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
2 pound ground venison
1 tablespoon dried oregano
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon sea salt
2 ounces dark chocolate chopped
1  12oz. bottle Guinness or lager beer
2 14oz. cans fire roasted tomatoes
2 151/2 oz. kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can black beans, rinsed, drained
1 can hominy, rinsed, drained

garnish: cheese and sour cream

Directions

Mix the chili powder, cumin, and chili flakes in small bowl. Heat a heavy large non-stick pot over medium heat. add the spices and stir for 30 seconds to 1 minute until fragrant.

Add the oil, then the onions and garlic, saute until beginning to soften, about 5 minutes. Add the ground meats and saute until no longer pink. Add the oregano, tomato paste, salt and chocolate, stir 1-2 minutes. Add the beer and simmer 5 minutes. Add the diced tomatoes and beans. Bring to a boil and reduce heat, simmer for 1 hour until the flavors develop.

Be safe in the next storm!
